New Events/Ongoing Projects
The City of Bridgeport places a high priority on updating and maintaining the citywide infrastructure that includes Streets, Utilities (Water and Sewer), Storm Water and Sidewalks. Our aggressive approach is a main reason for the City receiving an ISO Rating of four during our last review. Projects for calendar year 2001 include the following:
  • WATER PROJECTS: The City will invest $125,000.00 in water line replacements, meter upgrades, etc. The City will be updating over 600 water meters (15% of total meters in service). The City currently has 3,900 water customers including residential, commercial and industrial.
  • SEWER PROJECTS: The City is in the last phase of a $650,000.00 system upgrade that includes line replacement, pipe bursting, and pump station improvements. Our system has 24 pump stations. The line replacement, when complete, will include over 4,000 linear feet of new sanitary sewer and storm water lines.
  • STREET: Paving will begin this summer on an aggressive street replacement program. Over $300,000.00 has been budgeted to improve 2,000 +/- feet of city streets. Some of this includes repaving existing asphalt streets. A major portion of the budget will be the removal of a main residential artery with new subgrade and pavement.
  • SIDEWALKS: Our sidewalk construction will be done in house this calendar year by members of the Public Works Department. A projected budget of $30,000.00 is set aside for sidewalks.
  • WATER TANKS: $100,000.00 will be spent on repairing and painting a 250,000 gallon water tank. The City has three main storage tanks.
  • ROUTE 279 UPDATE: A new northern bypass for Bridgeport will be completed this year. It will connect US Route 50 to Interstate 79. This bypass will also give the Benedum Airport (The longest runway in the state) direct interstate access. Route 279 will be 2.76 miles long and built at a cost of $30,000,000.00. The West Virginia Department of Transportation is responsible for this new road system.
  • LODGEVILLE ROAD: Another mini bypass will begin construction this year with work being done by the West Virginia Department of Transportation. It is a connector road from US Route 50 to State Route 24 and will provide a west bypass through Bridgeport.
  • INTERSTATE 79: I-79, which runs through the heart of Bridgeport has recently been upgraded from a four lane to a six lane interstate in the northern section of the City. Now, I-79 will be upgraded from a four lane to an eight lane interstate in the southern section. This will include three bridge widening projects. This project has been ongoing and will continue through 2001.
