The Bridgeport Police Department is looking for enthusiastic self motivated volunteers who want to support their community by volunteering as a member of the Volunteers In Police Services (VIPS). VIPS is an organization comprised of community minded civilian volunteers patrolling in uniform (and in pairs). VIPS Officers exist to assist and support the Bridgeport Police Department with additional trained manpower wherever called upon. The men and women of VIPS are dedicated to public service and are committed to providing volunteer law enforcement service to our community, with the highest degree of courtesy, honor, respect and pride. There are a variety of areas where you can make a difference: Citizen Patrol; Disaster Response; and Administrative Assistance are just a few. Apply today and help support your community!

MAKE A DIFFERENCE

  • To help bridge the gap between the Bridgeport Police Department and the community which it serves, thereby improving community relations.
  • To assist the Bridgeport Police Department in deterring crime by having VIPS Officers perform uniformed patrol by auto or foot, targeted at reducing burglaries, auto thefts, acts of vandalism, or any other crimes against persons or property of the community.
  • To maintain a force of trained Volunteer Patrol Officers that would augment sworn Police Officers, aiding in pedestrian and traffic control in areas around major planned events (parades, road races, etc.) as well as during emergency responses (accidents, natural disasters, etc.)
  • To relieve sworn Police Officers for other duties as needed including administrative assistance.

The Bridgeport Police Department offers a ten to twelve week Citizens Police Academy Course for those interested in becoming a VIPS, Volunteer In Police Service Officer. All citizens who successfully complete the Citizens Police Academy are eligible to become a VIPS Officer.

During the ten to twelve week Academy you will enjoy courses such as: Patrol Services, Investigations, SWAT Operations, K-9 Operations, Police Motors, Crime Scene Investigation, Firearms training, Use of Force training, Court proceedings, Corrections, Domestic Violence law, CPR, Accident investigation and Juvenile proceedings.

Upon successfully completing the Citizens Police Academy and a thorough background investigation, you can soon be enjoying the benefits of being a VIPS Volunteer.

Police work is exciting and interesting and for many a satisfying vocation. Volunteering your time as a member of VIPS can be one of the most satisfying endeavors you may ever encounter.
