The Criminal Investigation Division is responsible for the follow-up investigations of crimes reported to the Bridgeport Police Department through the Patrol Division in most cases by uniformed police officers. Initial Criminal Investigation Reports are reviewed by Shift Supervisors and forwarded to the CID for investigation.

Cases are assigned to detectives through the Shift Supervisor, who makes the decision if the case should or should not be investigated by the CID. There are a number of factors considered by Supervisors when determining if a case should be assigned to CID. Because of the case load CID handles on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis, some cases may be assigned back to the Initial Reporting Patrol Officer for follow up. The Initial Reporting Patrol Officer’s current shift assignment will have a major impact of whether or not the case is reassigned back that officer due to several factors. If the officer is currently on Night Shift, follow up investigation may be difficult to execute due to the hours the officer is working, the severity of the crime reported and if the case is solvable. Cases which CID is assigned the investigation are generally violent crimes, property crimes involving a substantial loss or recurring pattern crimes.
